Actually, N isn’t hard. Think to yourself, “what makes the N most visibly different from the M?” It’s the shape of the letter on the lower-right side. The M is just straight up and down, the N is a V shape. So you just scan the rows, glancing at the lower-right section of each character. Presto, it jumps right out at you.
I found C the hardest, and I spent zero time finding the 6, it was just “Oh, there’s the 6 poking out above everything else”.
Good puzzles, and clever in that they are simply made out of text characters 🙂
Quite fun but if you had a specific form of synethstesia this would be a breeze.

The N was easiest! Because the font used is proportional, I just looked for the slightly shorter line. Sorted 🙂 The 6 was hardest. Most fonts have all figures the same width so that columns of figures line up.

I’ve found that if you blink your eyes a few times while looking at each individual puzzle that it becomes much easier to spot the non-similar character.

Hmmm. . . . that’s neat, but I think it might work better with a different font. Finding the C was hard, but the 6 was easy because it stuck up above the 9s, and the N was easy because its narrower than M and made that whole line shorter.

The “N” would have been hard if the fonts were monospaced – just look for the shorter line.
Actually, while tough, the N was actually kind of different from the rest…since it’s displaying as truetype fonts, the line with the N in it was shorter than the others. So there’s a built-in handicap.
The N would sure be a lot harder with a fixed-width font. By looking for the shortest line I found it in a few seconds.
The N was easy to find. You should re-do the puzzle with a non-proportional font, like courier (use the html pre tag?) — that will make the line lengths exactly the same and now the puzzle is really hard.

Hey these were good. But took me 3 seconds to find em. That’s all. But really good. Had me squinting for the first one. Then the rest followed easily.
The 6 was easiest. Took me half a second. Due to the font, it extends above the 9s. It sticks out like a sore thumb.
N took a second longer. I just looked at the right edge of the lines, and the line with the N is shorter than the others.
C had no significant differences in letter height or width, so took me a couple seconds longer.

The 9/6 puzzle was actually too easy—because the font this page is using (Georgia) uses old-style Roman numerals (where the 9 is a descender and the 6 is an ascender).
One thing I didn’t realize until just now: in all proportional (non-monospace) fonts, you can sometimes “cheat” by seeing which line is slightly shorter or longer than all the other ones.
I found each one almost instantly. Seemed kind lame. Anyone else?

I didn’t scan, I just stared at the middle and then found it. 2 seconds most puzzles, the O amidst the Qs took five seconds.
There’s actually a trick to spot them faster : cross your eyes (like for stereograms). The brain will spot much faster anomalies. It works best if you’re comfortable with viewing stereograms, though.

None of these were really hard. My average time was 3 seconds except for the O in Qs, that took me about 5. And this is not about the eyes, it is about the brain (although some may argue that eyes are part of brain)

This is reminiscent of a mini-game on the new Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS – you have to quickly scan and find a particular character in a large sea of similar looking characters.

I did them all in under a second except for O which for some reason I just couldn’t find at all. Ended up making Firefox find it for me just to prove that it was actually there.
My eyes are so burned out from staring at a monitor for hours on end yet the letters/numbers about jumped out at me, perhaps my bad eyes in fact help in this scenario.
Great now my eyes fell out and they are rolling on the floor.

Autistics — not necessarily savants — can often solve visual puzzles trivially, without realizing that there even is a puzzle.
This was neat, I had a terrible time with Q/O! But is was a fun kind of terrible. As a designer I work with fonts a lot and know some of the ins and outs for copy — this did give me a new respect for copyists.
Anyway, there are some tricks you can use to speed up your searches.
M/N: All the characters are the same width, except N (at least with my Safari browser). And it is a single block of characters: so you can scan the right side for the shorter line. That variation also helps when scanning the block the hard way: doing this in a monospace font would make it harder.
C/O: Serifed fonts will have a little serif at the top/end of the “C” character. In the sample, it was a vertically slanted line about pointing to between 12 and 1 o’clock. Unless your eyes have an astygamtism, this should make finding the C easy. Scan the block from top left, diagonally down. If you didn’t see it, scan from bottom-left diagonally up half way, and from top-right diagonally down. Try it, it may surprise you how quickly you spot the flaw.
]/[/|: Has the same thing: look for horizontal marks, the place that doesn’t ahve them should stand out. (I was surprised to see that leading places the pipe glyph equally spaced as the brackets!)
9/6: Another monospace thing, many fonts put the baseline of the numbers 0-9 at different places –if this is also combined with shortening of characters, it is called an OSF font, for “Old Style Font” because back in the way-old days that was normal. (Imagine 1900 with shorter 0’s than the rest. That seem familiar?) Any font that shows the 9,6 with decending 9 and ascending 6 will let you scan the top of each row for the sore thumb. Monospace fonts will not do that (try it, type “96” in a terminal).
You can’t use the straight-line scanning mechanism as easily for 9,6, because they are fully curved. Which makes Q/O a real copy nightmare!

There is a simple visual trick to finding the one different letter or digit in a group of similar items. Cross your eyes and alternate blinking the left and right eye until the item jumps out at you. This trick does not work for one-eyed persons or for individuals with large a proboscis.

Sorry, I don’t get it. I have HORRIBLE eyes, my eye sign has been going down to hell in the last 5 years – but I was able to distinguish the subject letters less than 2 seconds – for all of them.
I seriously don’t see how it could be hard for anyone . . .

quite easy really if you know what attributes to look for in each case. But challenging nevertheless. Just because something is easy doesn’t mean its not challenging. Good tests.

Interesting. I wonder what the cognitive difference is that causes the “C” to be the hardest for one group and the easiest for another, and vice-versa with the “N”.
0 is the most difficult for sure
N was actually the easiest. The line with the N was shorter than the lines with all Ms because it’s a proportional font. If you’d used a monospaced font, it would have been harder.
I must say, I used to be an editor back when we had to do headline counts and a capital M is 2 spaces and a capital N is 1.5, so I knew what to look for.
Very easy, didn’t even adopt row scanning. Just flitted through the pattern and completed it in a few seconds, less than 10 in each test.
i found all them without any problem. i would have to say the 6 was easiest then then the N.
It’s easy to know, just press the up and down cursor and you will find what’s different. But still it is a nice eye exercise!

All in all the only one that was even mildly chalenging was first one, if you know anything about typography they are all pretty easy to see except for the “C” becasue the capital C and capital O take up the same about of space.

Whats interesting to note is there is a large number of folks sorting the puzzle in less than 6 secs…This was a simple puzzle actually…I tried a trick on the Q puzzle giving a minor non allignment which made the puzzle a lil more difficult… What I would like to see is if there were more than 11 rows and two columns would the puzzle be a lil more harder to crack when…
a) the odd letter was not known?
b) if there was more than one odd letter
c) if there were more than one similar letter.
Kubix, ur variation with the W and V were interesting…I find moving the odd letter(s) to the bottom left of the puzzle makes it a little harder…

I found each one within 2 seconds. Not that my eyes are any good (I remember doing the O’s and C’s in high school for the ASVAB test, and it was the only one I didn’t score a perfect 100%.
But here’s the secret to finding them quickly.
Scroll down with your browser’s up/down arrows (don’t grab the scroll bar or jump a screen at a time).
Then look at it as if you’re looking PAST the characters (or trying to see everything at once) and then start scrolling. You’ll find the discrepencies almost immediately.
Try it, it works!
the V’s and W’s were the toughest for me, but also found within seconds using the technique above.

I found the Q/O the hardest.
Actually they were all pretty easy… just a couple of seconds were needed to solve all of them(same goes for the ones in the comments). I think we need something bigger(maybe a huge random string), with a requirement of finding a trigraph or smthing…
with squint-eyed you can trigger the right char very fast.
Perhaps what would help is to give an indication of what ‘hard’ is…? Is it whether it took > 1s ‘hard’? I found all of them in around 1s or less… is there a scientific basis for this?
all u have to do is scroll up and down then u will see a change in a line and then u can easily find it.
Simple pattern matching. Focus at a point between your eyes and the screen. Move the head/screen a bit aroun, and the odd character should create a discrepancy in the pattern presented.

Incredibly easy. I thought it was supposed to be a challenge…
I found that by putting the field slightly in motion using the scroll wheel and looking at sections of the field the change jumps out out you. Motion added a dimension which actually made the task easier for me…

I found them all before I even looked at the page. By tuning into the audio frequency of my video card I was able to determine what was about to be drawn to the screen buffer before it was actually drawn, and in the brief fraction of a second of time I was able to find each letter in a group that was not like the others. Your silly games amuse me, bring me more puzzles and your finest cheese.
Relax, try not to focus on any one part of the image, just let your eyes take it in. Look at the whole, not the sum of its parts, and your brain will naturally focus on the point thats different.
If you cant relax and focus on the whole, just look to the side and allow your peripheral vision to pick it up, its the same thing.
Your brain is a pattern matching engine and will naturally distinguish like from not alike, just let it do its work without trying to control the process.

N was hardest.. I think [ easyest, but the C was easy too. All I had to do for the C was use my peripheral vision to look at the whole thing.

Neat puzzle. Unlike most of the commenters, I had the hardest time trying to find the pipe symbol out of the square brackets. That could be because it is way past my bedtime though. I found the rest rather easily, however. Thanks for the quick eye-exam!

You should have used images so the exercises would have looked like they probably looked when you did them. Not everyone has the same fonts.

Cover one of your eyes. They all get easy after that. That is, except for the “ilj” puzzle.
Except for the first all were easy to find out. the first one was a bit confusing and it takes a while to get the eyes adjusted.

This was very good and very enjoyable, but quite easy (it may have been due to the choice of font). They key is to 1) be able to quickly scan a page — speedreaders do well here and 2) quickly determine the “key” factor and work on that assumption. For example, you only need scan the botton of the line when looking for an “O” among the “Q”s. Another way is to scan column by column reather than row by row.
I would like to hear from people that found all of the differences in less than 1 minute. Was that total time for all of them? If so, what “technique” did you use?

Not sure if this will post true to original, but if not, look at it yourself and see, every other line, starting with the second line, is an “i”. in fact, there are THREE “i’s” in the puzzle!
Perhaps this was intentional, because for me, it was the break in a pattern that gives it away, and the “i” is more camouflaged when there is other “i’s” making it blend in within the scheme of a pattern. It would be a good way to make them more difficult, to find the non-dominant less numerous letter amidst the larger sea of a similar letter, harder still, if the letter was unspecified.
I spent the most time (20-30 secs) on the fake “W” posted in comments, you know the one, and I used no tricks, or special tactics. I just relaxed, and let my brain do the work, and got them all in moments.

I cant seem to find the z wher is it and every single one was a breze except the z telll me plz!!!!!
i thought the o was the hardest and no one else thought that it was the hardest the c was easy and everyone else thought the c was the hardest
The o was the hardest, but still found it under 1 min. All the others were no challange, I saw them pratically immediatly.
