Twins, triplets, stock photography and a lazy publisher

Novelish – A fascinating new blog that talks about books, reviews novels, movies etc.,…what puzzled me completely me was how the heck did he find these similar book covers in the following post.
Great Find

Go into any bookstore and you’ll see photos on covers everywhere. I’m not sure whether publishers think photography sells books better or they’re just too cheap to pay an artist, but it seems to be a growing trend in cover design.

Two photo-cover examples

The Road Cormac McCarthy cover

Cormac McCarthy’s The Road won the Pulitzer prize and was selected by Oprah’s book club. The tone is changed and some of the color gone, but it’s more or less the same.

New Moon

New Moon Stephenie Meyer cover

Stephenie Meyer’s vampire romances have resided near the top of children’s bestseller lists for a while now. See how they flipped and rotated the picture and completely added the extra petal?

Book Covers

Here are not two but three covers with the same image. I haven’t been able to locate the original photo it came from.

  1. Is this legal? Isn’t there some kind of copyright infringment law associated with these kinds of duplications?

  2. This is actually really scary, i mean this shouldn’t be so easy

  3. Am not sure if it is illegal, Judasmom…these are photographs available for free download on the net…no copyright is probably attached to it…but it looks like the publishers have overlooked / failed in the art department which overlooks the cover design…
